Ever wondered what a visit to a sexual health clinic involved ? To find out take a short tour of the clinic when Lucy and Marcus came to the clinic.

  • Why do people come to the Sexual Health Service ?
    People attend the sexual health service for different reasons -
    • Information/advice about sexual health issues
    • screening for infection
    • contraception - including emergency contraception
    • HIV testing
    • Hepatitis B vaccination
    • Pre-pregnancy advice and pregnancy testing
    • Termination of pregnancy counselling
    • psychosexual issues
  • Will anyone need to know I have been ?
    Any information you give us is strictly confidential. It will not be discussed outside the clinic without your permission. The receptionist will ask you to complete an information sheet with your name, address and date of birth. If you do not wish to be contacted at home, please give us an address or telephone number where we can contact you, should it be necessary.

  • What questions will I get asked ?
    You will be called by your first name and clinic number into an interview room. You will be asked as appropriate about:-
    • any symptoms/concerns you may have
    • your sexual history
    • your medical history
    • whether you are allergic to any medication
  • Will I need to examined ?
    Not necessarily. Examinations are not done routinely. The doctor/nurse or health advisor may suggest it if you have a particular problem or if you ask for a full sexual health check-up. Depending on your needs you may have:-
    • tests to screen for infection
    • your blood pressure and weight measured
    • a urine sample taken
    • a blood sample taken
    • HIV testing is not done unless you request it
  • What is a Health Advisor ?
    You may see a health advisor. The health advisor is there to:-
    • explain the nature of your diagnosis and see that you understand the doctors instructions
    • answer any questions you amy have concerning your sexual health
    • advise about safer sex, condom use and risk reduction
    • discuss informing any partners who may be at risk of infection
    • offer pre and post HIV test counselling
    • offer support concerning any anxieties about sexually transmitted infections or HIV.
  • What if I only want some advice or information ?
    You can speak to a nurse or health advisor when you attend,

  • I think I might be pregnant
    The clinic can offer pregnancy testing and advice about your options.

  • I have been sexually assaulted
    There are doctors and nurses in the clinic that have special expertise in helping those that have suffered a sexual assault.
