Putting Evidence into Practice (PEP)
A short course opportunity is available for NHS staff who would like to build their knowledge and understanding of evidence-based practice and critical appraisal. Due to the highly positive response to the Putting Evidence into Practice (PEP) course, further sessions are being held across NHS South Central in 2009.
This course offers an opportunity for all NHS Allied Healthcare Professionals and Healthcare Scientists (including pharmacists, biomedical scientists and psychologists etc) to take part in a short course on evidence based practice. The course is held over 5 weeks with 5 face-to-face contact days supported by online learning throughout the course.
NO COURSE FEES for NHS staff working in the South Central region. This is great value for NHS staff continuing professional development and in building knowledge in applying relevant evidence to your practice.
Quote from recent participant: "I thought this was an excellent course and I have got a lot from it. I actually did not believe I would ever have the skills to present an article at our professional forum but now I know I can. In five weeks I have come a long way."
To find out more go to www.ebp4nhs.org.uk or contact the Course Administrator, Mrs Gill Glasbey, by email at gill.glasbey@iow.nhs.uk or by phone at 01983 534 178.
Library Management System
The Healthcare Library uses a system called SWIMS (short for South and West Management System). SWIMS is an online database listing details and availability of the books, journals and other items in your local NHS library and other NHS libraries across the south west region.
There are a number of advantages for library users:
-
It can be accessed anywhere there is an Internet linked computer
-
Identified items may be requested using our online forms or via the Healthcare Library
-
One library card that you can use in any library that has the SWIMS system
How do I search SWIMS?
Go to http://www.swims.nhs.uk
-
On screen instructions are provided for entering details and selecting options
-
Specific online help is available at the top of the page for each stage of the search
Please ensure that we have your correct details on record. If you feel that your details require updating, please go to the membership page and complete a Registration/Update form.
It is important that you take care of your membership card and remember to take it with you if you change jobs or go on placement or secondment to another Trust.
The Mental Health Email Interest Groups
Email interest groups are an easy way of keeping up to date with what is new in the library. Each month for each subject area a Librarian will scan the journals that we receive in the library and those we have access to electronically for articles of interest. Details of these - plus new books added to library stock, information about conferences and any other nuggets of information will be sent out in a monthly email. We will provide links to information available electronically and supply via email articles only available in the library, books can be sent out in the internal post.
What you need to do – if you are not already a member then you will need to join the library by going to the membership page and then register for the groups you wish to join via this form.
The current groups are:
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Depression
Eating Disorders
Electroconvulsive Therapy
Mental Health Law and Ethics
Mental Health Nursing
Mental Health Services and Policy
NICE and Mental Health
Old Age Psychiatry
Personality Disorders
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Psychopharmacology
Psychotherapy and Counselling
Schizophrenia
Suicide and Self-Harm
We are considering introducing a group to cover Home Treatment/Early Intervention and other community based services. If you would be interested in this group please email Library.Healthcare@berkshire.nhs.uk
Search 2.0
